At Toki Explorers, we believe that children are naturally curious, capable and eager to learn. Our role is to create an environment where that curiosity can flourish, where children feel a strong sense of belonging, are encouraged to explore at their own pace, and have the freedom to follow their interests and discover the world around them.

We see the environment as the third teacher. Just as children learn from the people around them, they also learn from the spaces, materials and experiences we thoughtfully provide. Every area of our centre has been intentionally designed to invite exploration, encourage independence and support children at their individual stage of development.

We believe play is one of the most powerful ways children learn. Through play, children make sense of their world, develop relationships, express their ideas, solve problems and build confidence. A simple block construction can become an opportunity to explore mathematics, engineering and collaboration, while imaginative play can support language, creativity, social skills and emotional development.

Throughout Toki Explorers, children have access to natural, open-ended and thoughtfully selected resources. We value materials that don’t have just one predetermined purpose, because they allow children to use their imagination and develop their own ideas.

LEARNING

At Toki Explorers, we believe children are active participants in their own learning. We give children the freedom to choose the areas, experiences and resources that spark their curiosity, while our teachers are there to listen, encourage and extend their thinking.

Through meaningful conversations with children, our teachers discover what interests them, what they are wondering about and what they are ready to explore next. These conversations become an important part of each child’s learning journey and lead to individual learning notes, capturing their discoveries, progress, interests and achievements.

These stories are carefully documented in each child’s individual portfolio, creating a treasured record of their time at Toki Explorers and celebrating not only what they have learned, but who they are becoming as confident, capable learners.


